About the Landlord Award

HomeProtect’s Landlord of the Year Award seeks to champion all UK landlords who choose to break the perceived mould, strive never to cut corners and deliver the best quality service possible when every aspect of the profession is considered.
We wanted those landlords who go over and above for their tenants to be recognised and prove that landlords really do have their tenants’ best interests at heart most of the time.

“For the time we have lived in this property, she has ensured that everything has been perfect. She has the patience of a saint, a heart of gold and she will literally do anything for her tenants. I feel privileged to be one of her tenants.”

What does it mean to you to be HomeProtect’s Landlord of the Year?

I feel very privileged! I know there a lot of landlords that do a good job and to be chosen was such a surprise.

Can you tell us a bit more about why you think your tenant nominated you for this award?

I know Emma and her family have their challenges in life and try so hard bringing up a young family and trying to do the best for them all. I understand life challenges and have always worked with her to support her when times are hard. She always comes good and I recognise this. I believe in life you should treat others as you want to be treated.

What do you enjoy most about being a landlord?

It can be hard work and things don’t always go the way you expect but it can be a very good business to be in. You have to treat it as you would any other business. I do enjoy being able to provide a home for someone and the interaction with tenants can be enjoyable with the right tenants of course.

What advice would you give a first-time landlord?

I always meet my potential tenants prior to offering them a tenancy. I then have them complete a full application form. A good tenant is one that will respect the property, communicate well and pay their rent on time. When you first meet with them it gives you the opportunity to get a “gut feel” for the type of people they are and if you are comfortable with them that you can have a good landlord/tenant relationship.

What has been your proudest moment during your time as a landlord?

Probably now... getting this award and the gratitude that it gives me knowing my tenants really appreciate all that I do and taking the time to nominate me!

What is your opinion on those who negatively generalise landlords and assume all provide a bad service?

Like any business... don’t judge everyone the same way! You will always have some who do not play by the book and think that they are exempt from following rules, procedures and being compliant. I know many landlords who provide good housing for their tenants and run very good property businesses. Bad press always sells news though and so good to see HomeProtect sending out the positive message on landlords and recognising the ones that are doing a good job!
